First contact dietitians in primary care are a diagnostic clinician who may see the patient first and assesses and manage undifferentiated and undiagnosed presentations. Dietitians in primary care can: Diagnose/manage IBS – improving patient outcomes/saving significant GP appointments Reduce frailty/manage malnutrition, including reviewing the use of nutritional borderline substances/improving patient outcomes/saving GP appointments/implementing significant cost saving strategies across PCNs. Diagnose/manage pre-diabetes/diabetes – improving patient outcomes and achieving QOF points relating to diabetes/obesity, and requirements of the Enhanced Service Specification for weight management. Dietitians with supplementary prescribing rights can review/deprescribe/prescribe relevant medications.
